Coyote Teeth + Mescal Regalia
Bones, fur, and seeds have been extensions of our bodies for thousands of years. Flesh and bone are not mere adornments, but reminders of the nature of our own existence, its impermanence, and at the same time, its ever-lasting imprint. We see power in all relations. Birds, animals, sky, earth. We are connected to it all, and we call all wisdom in.
As descendants of many people who fell under the umbrella term “chichimeca” - dog people. We embrace this term and honor our relations to brother coyote. We look to him as our guide and friend. We honor his stealth and resilience. His relation to the night sky. His tricky wisdom and joy. The energy of the coyote relative allows us to be adaptable, navigating our terrains with ease and wit. We dance along his well-marked path, joining in his prayers to the moon.
This piece was made with ceremonial purposes in mind, to elevate our prayers through the help of coyote and the sacred mescal bean.
People all around the world have sacred relations to dogs, coyotes, wolves. Our bond is one without beginning or end. It knows no one culture or boundary. Although we recognize this — we would love for this regalia to find its home in the hands of a native of central/northern Mexico and the present-day American southwest. As this is where our lineages spring from, and our energies and prayers lie.
Note: the fur of the animal will differ from necklace to necklace — we use scraps of different animals. These scraps are a variety of different animal furs (muskrat, coyote, fox, beaver). However, the teeth used will always be Coyote teeth.
